Ball Rush
Location: Indoors/Outdoors - Duration: approximately 1½ hours - Participation: for groups of between 9 and 300 people

The objective of this exercise is to build a structure which, when successfully completed, will send a ball along the length of the structure operating various elements such as cantilevers and rolling along channels. At the end of its path, the ball will set off a domino reaction, thereby opening the final element for the Balloon Finalé.

Each of the teams are confronted with a ‘Treasure Chest’ containing some instructions for the Challenge.  Alongside the chest is a range of equipment for a particular element of the Ball Rush.  Using the equipment provided, they must build a structure which conforms to the measurements and instructions given. Each team must work alongside the team next to them, to ensure that their elements are compatible.  The teams have approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to construct the Ball Rush, and to set the ball in motion.  Once the Ball Rush itself has been started, no team members may touch the equipment - this is the real test - will it work?!

The real beauty of the event is that the teams think they just have to construct their element of the Ball Rush but it soon becomes obvious that they need to talk to each of the other teams to produce the overall effect.  A real sense of team effort and achievement will be experienced by the group when the Ball Rush works!
